Cold start observation and idle stability test | Note: The B38 three-cylinder engine is prone to excessive vibration if the upper engine mounts have perished; check for cabin shake at idle.

Hard acceleration from low speeds to check for drivetrain hesitation | Note: Look for 'Drivetrain Malfunction' warnings which often indicate a faulty turbocharger wastegate actuator, a known weak point on early B38 units.

Inspect the engine bay specifically around the oil filter housing and coolant expansion tank | Note: Common plastic fatigue leads to coolant leaks; look for white crusty residue which signals an imminent cooling system failure.

Check steering feel and listen for clicking during low-speed maneuvers | Note: Electronic steering racks in F20/F40 generations can develop play or 'clunking' which is an expensive assembly replacement in NZ.
